What is Neuroqueer Creative?

Neuroqueer Creative is an international collective of creative practitioners and facilitators dedicated to building a more neuroqueer society through decapitalised creative practices and radical social justice. NQC operates on the premise that creative practice is broad and all-encompassing; that it is never a straight line to production, but instead an iterative, spirally, meandering process that we are forever fluctuating within. We believe that making art is a radical practice; that everyone should have easy access to creative knowledge, experience and practices, and that creativity and imagination are the key to building better worlds.
What is NQ?

What Do We Mean by 'Neuroqueer'?

Dr Nick Walker coined the term in 2008, and we encourage you to read his short introduction to the term at the link below. Dr Walker says: “I originally conceived of neuroqueer as a verb: neuroqueering as the practice of queering (subverting, defying, disrupting, liberating oneself from) neuronormativity and heteronormativity simultaneously… This definition is, again, not an authoritative “last word” on the subject, because that would be a silly thing to attempt. Rather, I hope this will be taken as a “first word” – a broad “working definition” from which further theory, practice, and play will proceed." NQC takes perhaps a broader approach to ‘neuroqueering’ which asks the questions: What do cisheteronormativity and neuronormativity work in service of? And, Why do we neuroqueer? To us - it is clear that cisheteronormativity, neuronormativity, and all axes of social oppression (racism, sexism, misogynoir, classism, ableism, etc) work in service of the larger structures that oppress us all: White Supremacy, Colonialism, and Capitalism. White Supremacy is the ideology. The overarching, deeply held belief system that drives systemic oppression. Capitalism is the mechanism. The structure that embeds and nourishes that systemic oppression. Colonialism is the distribution method. The means by which the ideology and mechanism (and therefore, systemic oppression) are spread throughout the world. So, if we neuroqueer to 'subvert, defy, disrupt, liberate ourselves from neuronormativity and cisheteronormativity simultaneously', then we should seek to 'subvert, defy, disrupt, liberate ourselves from' White Supremacy, Colonialism and Capitalism. So - at NQC - we define neuroqueer in the following way: To Queer: To subvert, defy, disrupt, liberate oneself (and one’s community) from Capitalism, Colonialism and White Supremacy through making, acting, being and doing… Neuro: And also through thinking, perceiving, and processing.

What Does NQC Offer?

There are a number of ways NQC can support you or your organisation in applying neuroqueer practices to your creativity, your work and your life.
Courses:
NQC offers a wide range of both short and long-term courses built around neuroqueering practices and facilitated by a variety of practitioners from across the NQC community. Courses are ‘learning’ spaces, where new ideas are introduced, reflected on and practiced. They (usually) meet weekly and have a clear start and end date.
Clubs:
Clubs are ‘practice’ spaces where members of the community meet to engage in particular creative practices, with gentle guidance and invitations from facilitators. These meet monthly throughout the year and can be joined (or left) at any time.
1:1 Mentoring & Support:
Many of the members of the NQC facilitator community are available for one-to-one support. Our mentors each have specific areas of experience from creative writing, to audio production, to neurodivergent employability. Browse all mentors below or submit a query and we’ll match you with the perfect person!
Organisational Consultations & Creative Commissions:
Many of the members of the NQC facilitator community are available for organisational consultations and/or creative commissions. Our facilitators represent a wide range of creative and professional experience, and can be commissioned for sector-specific presentations, workshops and panels, as well as art, writing, branding, performance and other individual creative work. Browse all creatives below or submit a query and we’ll match you with the perfect person!

All NQC course attendees, club members and individual clients are part of the NQC community and will have free lifetime access to Creative Space: a gently structured, online body-doubling session that takes place twice weekly: Mondays, 5-6pm UK & Thursdays, 10-11am UK.
Additionally, anyone is welcome to join the NQC Skool Community for free. Don’t let the name scare you! Free Skool members also get free lifetime access to Creative Space, as well as a 5% discount on all NQC Courses. Paid Skool members get a 10% discount on all courses and access to all four clubs for less than via the NQC website. Plus, Skool allows you to engage directly with the wider NQC community. See below for more info on what Skool is, why NQC is currently using it, and reasons you might want to join.
You can also subscribe to our Substack and receive 1-2 posts a month from our community of facilitators, exploring the ways they are bringing their own interests, practices and processes to the wider NQC community.
Or, subscribe directly to our email list to receive the above as well as updates and reminders for the specific offerings you are interested in.

A Note:

Neuroqueering is a radical and deeply political practice. This means Neuroqueer Creative is staunchly abolitionist, anti-fascist, and pro-Palestine. In line with this, we are working to divest from both Google and Wix. Replacing this functionality requires time and resources, as we need multiple integrated platforms; however, we plan to complete the process within the first half of 2026.

We are currently accepting donations to our divestment fund. We hope to raise £1000 to cover all costs of moving our website, email hosting, online shop & web-based storage.
