Course Info:
Two full weekends of discovery while generating text and movement for your solo show! This workshop is an invitation for neuroqueer creatives to tell the stories that they are drawn to without feeling forced to conform to the expectations of mainstream theatre. You do not need a show idea to attend!
In this workshop we will:
Expand on what a solo show structure might look like and the different forms it might take
Work in solo exercises and in pairs
Use the workshop to try out different ideas or variations of the idea you've brought
Create using written, physical, and vocal explorations that you can add to your creative practice
Experiment with ways of making a record of your work
Address the barriers that neurodivergent performers face and explore ways of avoiding burnout and being gentle with ourselves.
Please note:
Performers might be invited to read aloud during exercises but this can be from any text you choose (a monologue, a nursery rhyme, a section of song lyrics) Please bring whatever feels familiar.
Course materials such as slides or recommended watching, etc. will be provided.
With all exercises, adjustments can be provided for access.
Due to the nature of this work, sessions will not be recorded.
Neuroqueering Your Solo Show is a place to explore, expand, and extract the essence of what it is you want your solo show to say. You will come away with the smallest seed of an idea and the tools to return to in order to help that seed take root.
This workshop is an experiment that will allow us to gather data about how to build a supportive, creative space for trying out new ways of making performance. We hope to apply what we learn here to a longer version of this course in spring 2027.
If you are looking for extra support, there is an additional offer to meet one on one with one of our facilitators: Ashleigh Gray or Erika Phoenix. We encourage people to take advantage of these even if they don't have specific solo show plans! We are offering them at £35 which represents a deep discount. These sessions can be booked through the end of the workshop so you can decide to add them on at a later date.
About the Facilitators:

Ashleigh Gray (they/she) is a queer, AuDHD, chronically ill performer, workshop & yoga facilitator, with a particular interest in aftercare for artists. They wrote and performed Tumours to a sold-out run as part of Maiden Speech Festival 2018, before taking it to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Soho Theatre in 2019. They are currently writing a memoir, completing a Trauma and Social Justice in Yoga teacher training programme, and recently received an Arts Council Lottery Grant to develop a series of workshops for artists and survivors of sexual assault.

Erika Phoenix (she/they) is a non-binary, neurodivergent artist, writer, performer & activist based in Wales, who has worked for many years as a theatre arts educator. They believe everyone should have access to the arts as a means of self-exploration, and through their advising, facilitating, and project planning, they support creatives in making the things that they want to make.
