Course Info:
Art for Activism is a series of standalone sessions introducing a particular artist practice through the lens of political activism. We live in a time when social oppression and economic injustice are at the forefront of our lives and minds, and our time, energy, and focus is constantly being co-opted by the need to survive under Capitalism. Creative practice is one way we can stay connected to our humanness and humanness of everyone else around us, and using art in our activism can engage communities, change harmful narratives, and speak truth to power.
In each session, a different creative practitioner will introduce a specific art form and how it has been and can be applied to our activist practices. Sessions will include history and examples of how that particular form has been used to effect change, invitations to create our own activist art, and opportunities for discussion and sharing. This course is for everyone and anyone. No creative or artistic skill or experience is necessary.
Session Info:
Zines (pronounced "zeens") are small, self-published, non-commercial booklets or pamphlets, often photocopied and assembled by hand, offering a platform for personal expression, niche interests, and counter-cultural voices outside mainstream media. The DIY, low-resource, easily disseminated nature of the Zine has leant itself to political activism throughout its (longer than you may think) history. In this session, Leif will share some of the history of zines as activist tools, and take us through creative invitations to create zines about the political issues and movements that are most pressing to us.
Facilitator Info:

Leif (they/them) is the queer Chicago-based AuDHD artist and zine maker behind It’s Weird Now Press. Their creative practice is rooted in survival, self-compassion, and finding humor in the mess of being human. Through zines and mixed media work, Leif explores the beauty and chaos of the in-between. They view art-making as an act of resistance, healing, and re-imagination. Leif believes everyone is inherently creative and through the simple act of making - holds the power to transform not only themselves but also the world.
