Course Info:

A two-hour online workshop for anyone who’s curious about analogue collage but doesn’t know where to start, or would like to explore a creative outlet that can supplement their primary medium.

With collage, you don’t need to start with an idea in mind. Discovering the piece as you build it, and letting yourself be led by what emerges, can bypass the inner critic and help you access a state of imaginative play. In this workshop, you’ll learn the basics of creating surreal and abstract collages, with time during the session to make your own.

What to expect:

  • Learn about making surreal, narrative-style collages - what makes something narratively charged?

  • Learn about making abstract collages, and how to approach composition and colour

  • A demonstration of different collage techniques and tools

  • Plenty of activity time during the session to practice techniques and create your own collages

  • Learn how to use your existing materials creatively and where best to source new ones

  • Time for questions and discussion

If you’d like to collage during the session, bring any materials (magazines, books, printed images, cardboard/paper recycling, etc…) that you’re happy to cut up!

Facilitator Info:

Lily Smart (she/her) is a collage artist who works with vintage materials and explores the narratives just out of frame. She first came to collage when she was struggling with her writing practice, and it quickly became her primary creative outlet. She speaks about the play and rest that support a sustainable creative life, and shares an inside look at her creative process, on Instagram @lilysm.art. Check out Lily's work at Lilysm.art.
