Session Info:

This event exists so we can hold and be held in our grief. There is so much to grieve today in both our individual and collective lives; our individual selves are often not big enough to hold it all, but as Francis Weller says, "Grief has always been communal and has always been connected to the sacred...ritual is the means whereby we can work the ground of grief, allowing it to move, shift, and, ultimately, take a new shape in the soul." We'll tend to our grief using the ancient technology of the Circle, a formation, structure, and container that comes from Indigenous peoples by way of Restorative Justice.

In this 1 hour and 40 minute circle, we will attend to our grief by responding to prompts designed to draw us into relationship with our experience of grief and heartbreak. In circle you have agency; if you are given the talking stick and you don't want to share, you can pass your turn. We can come back to you if the desire to speak later appears. You can share as much or as little you would like.

Here is a resource that has tips for how to participate in a Circle

You're encouraged to bring the following items should you wish to join:

  • a candle or any other meaningful object that reflects your intention.

  • any items that help you feel grounded or supported (e.g. essential oils, favorite hoodie, tissues for any emotion that might arise, etc.)

  • knitting, crocheting, clay, play-dough, or fidget toys or anything else that helps you stay present during the circle.

  • pen and paper for your own reflections and journaling.

An agenda of the session is below:

  1. Welcome & Settling In (10 min)**

  2. Check-in (20 min)

  3. Silent Reflection (10 minutes)

  4. Main Round (45 min)

  5. Check-out and Closing (15 min)

**I will make invitations to attune to one's body during this time; however, you are always encouraged to decline any invitations I make if they don't feel right to you.

I'll leave you with this quote that articulates the power and importance of circle: "What I have discovered in grief rituals over many years is that we feel relief when we finally are able to acknowledge our pain with one another. We can also share our grief with a tree or express it through music. The main thing is to welcome it and grant it a place in our lives. When we do, we become larger, and we can sense our intimate bond with all creation." - Francis Weller
